BY JOSEPH GARDNER-MARTINEZ, Associated Press – NEW YORK (AP) A father of two from suburban Queens says he’s convinced his son, who died at the age of 7, was mentally ill.
Joseph Gardner-Martinez, who lives with his wife, Krista, said his son was autistic and suffered from a severe mental illness.
He’s a devoted father and has an autistic son who he describes as having “extraordinary intelligence.”
He’s also a close friend of his son’s and has spent countless hours with him since he was a young boy.
He says the only reason his son didn’t die is because he was not given proper treatment.
“The reason I think he died is because I am a selfish person and didn’t give him the treatment that he needed,” Gardner-Martin said.
The family has been living in the family home for the past seven years and Gardner- Martin said he is now worried about his son.
“My son is an incredibly intelligent child.
He is very bright.
He has the best heart in the world,” Gardner said.
“He’s also very good at making friends.
I’m very scared that I might have lost him.”
Gardner-Martini says he has asked the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to examine his son because he believes he’s autistic.
He believes he may have been misdiagnosed or misdiagnosing himself.
“I know it’s not a good thing that he was never given proper help.
I don’t think that he should have been treated.
I think that the people who took care of him were doing the right thing,” he said.”
But I do feel like he should’ve been treated as a child.
I feel like we were a little selfish and we should’ve treated him better.”GARDNER’S PRAYER FOR MY CHILDThe family’s petition to the CDC says, “We have a son, Joseph Gardner- Martinez, who was diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at birth.
He had to undergo therapy, and the diagnosis was made after his first visit to a child and adolescent psychiatrist.”
Gardson-Martines petition states that Gardner- Martini was taken to a hospital in Queens when he was only 5 months old.
The petition says, “[He] was admitted to a mental health facility where he was placed on medication to help him function and improve.
But he did not receive the proper care, as he was neglected and malnourished, deprived of food, sleep, and proper medical attention.
